Privacy policy

The short version: Big Weather doesn't track you, doesn't sell your data, doesn't require an account, and doesn't know who you are. The forecast stays between your Mac and the weather providers, and AI insights currently run locally via Apple Intelligence on your Mac.

The overview

Big Weather is made by Urtti Apps Oy to give you a clear, thoughtful forecast in your menu bar, not to collect your personal life. There are no user accounts, no email lists to opt out of, no advertising networks, and no trackers following you around the web.

Your location

Big Weather needs to know where you are to show you the right temperature and rain curve, but it only uses your coordinates to ask Apple WeatherKit or WeatherAPI for conditions at that spot.

Those requests are anonymous: they are never tied to your name, your Apple ID, or anything identifiable. When you save favorite places, they stay on your own Mac (or sync across your Macs via your private iCloud account). They never touch an Urtti Apps server.

With the Calendar layout, coming soon in Big Weather 5.2 (below), your location also goes to Apple Maps, to time the drive to your plans and to look up the places your trips go to.

Your calendar

Big Weather 5.2, coming soon, adds a Calendar layout, part of Premium. Big Weather reads your calendar only while that layout is picked, and only after you allow it when macOS asks. You can take that back at any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Calendars.

It reads the coming week's events on your Mac. Where Apple Intelligence is available, it sorts them there, on-device: whether a plan is indoors or out, a call or a journey, and where a trip goes. What it works out stays on your Mac.

To show a plan's weather, its place has to leave your Mac, the way your location does for your own forecast. The coordinates of the places your plans go to are sent to Apple WeatherKit for their forecasts, and to Apple's map services for the place's name and the drive there. When a trip names its place only in words, such as “Barcelona”, those words go to Apple Maps' search to find it.

Those requests go to Apple only. Nothing from your calendar is sent to an Urtti Apps server, to TelemetryDeck, or to anyone else.

Apple Intelligence & AI insights

In Big Weather 5.0, AI insights are generated using Apple Intelligence (macOS 27 on supported Macs). Currently, these models run entirely on-device on your Mac.

In the future, Apple's Private Cloud Compute may also be used for more complex processing, backed by Apple's verifiable privacy architecture where data is never stored or accessible even to Apple.

Your location and forecasts are never sent to third-party AI services or used to train external models.

Anonymous analytics

To know whether features are working and catch bugs when they happen, Big Weather uses TelemetryDeck.

TelemetryDeck is a privacy-first European service that avoids storing personally identifiable information. It uses a random anonymized identifier, requires no cookies, and complies strictly with GDPR.

Purchases & subscriptions

Payment processing is handled entirely by Apple through the Mac App Store. I never receive, process, or see your credit card or billing details. You can review Apple's Privacy Policy for how they handle transaction data.

To manage Premium access and allow you to restore purchases across your Macs, Big Weather uses RevenueCat. RevenueCat generates an anonymous App User ID so the app knows whether Premium is active. No personal information is attached.
